#DFOB2019 – Caption Adjudicator – Vaughn Wiester

Vaughn Wiester grew up in Mount Vernon, Ohio and began playing with local jazz bands in his teens. Vaughn studied music at The Ohio State University and went on to freelance on trombone for several years, notably with Woody Herman in the mid-1970s.

Vaughn has taught jazz studies at Capital University and has worked with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, the Kenley Players, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Rick Brunetto Big Band and many others.

Vaughn is also a very talented arranger.  Hewas one of the original members of The Keith Henson Octet and his playing and arrangements were featured on Henson’s two CD’s, “Our Delight,” and “Perkin’ with the Keith Henson Octet.” His arrangement of Charles Mingus’ composition, “Duke Ellington Sound of Love” was recorded on the Woody Herman LP, “Road Father.”

His library of jazz charts and CDs is one of the largest in the United States. In February 2012 he was selected to give the pre-concert lecture for Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s Stan Kenton Centennial Concert.

Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra is made up of 21 of central Ohio’s finest musicians who perform on Monday nights at the Clintonville Woman’s Club, near the Park of Roses in Columbus, Ohio.
